How I can help.

ways we can work together

I work on hard, human problems in regulated hardware — most often medical devices, but the same toolkit applies to any product where the user is under pressure and the cost of getting it wrong is real.

I'm currently a Senior UX Design Engineer at BD, and I'm passively open to the right full-time role. Outside of that I take on a small number of freelance briefs and collaborations each year — usually short, focused engagements where a fresh pair of design-engineering eyes pays back quickly.

What I offer

pick & mix

Medical device UX & human factors

End-to-end UI/UX and human factors for regulated devices — on-device GUI, alarms, sterile-field interactions and the documentation that has to back it up.

  • Formative usability studies (moderated, scenario-based)
  • IEC 62366 & HE75-aligned use specifications and URS
  • Touchscreen and embedded GUI design, hand-off and validation
  • Alarm and notification architecture across GUI, light and audio

Industrial & product design

Concept through manufacture-ready CAD for hardware that has to feel right in the hand and survive a production line.

  • Concept development, sketching and design exploration
  • SolidWorks / CATIA surface and block modelling
  • Engineering drawings, GD&T and DFM support
  • Materials, finish and supplier conversations

Out-of-box experience & packaging

The first five minutes a user spends with your product are the brand. I design the unbox, the IFU and the quick-start so that first impression lands.

  • Unboxing flow and packaging architecture
  • Quick-start guides and IFU layout
  • Iconography and step illustrations
  • Validation against first-use user testing

Rapid prototyping & visualisation

Tangible models and photoreal visuals to de-risk decisions early — long before tooling, often before the spec is locked.

  • Foam, 3D-printed and machined functional prototypes
  • KeyShot photoreal renders for stakeholders & marketing
  • Animations and exploded-view walkthroughs
  • Test rigs and jigs for formative studies

Design research & strategy

Ethnographic and contextual research turned into opportunity maps your team can actually act on — not a 60-page deck nobody reads.

  • Contextual inquiry, interviews and field observation
  • Synthesis: journeys, personas, jobs-to-be-done
  • Opportunity mapping and concept prioritisation
  • Workshop facilitation with cross-functional teams

AI-augmented design sprints

Compressed, week-scale engagements that use AI tooling — Vizcom, Lovable, LLM research synthesis — to cover more ground than a traditional sprint without losing rigour.

  • Vizcom-assisted sketch-to-render ideation
  • Lovable interactive prototypes for stakeholder review
  • LLM-assisted literature and competitor synthesis
  • Live demo + opportunity write-up at sprint close

How I work

the short version

  1. 01

    Discover

Talk to users, watch the work, read the standards. Understand the problem before sketching the answer.

  2. 02

    Define

Frame the brief — use specifications, requirements, success criteria — so the team agrees on what 'done' looks like.

  3. 03

    Prototype

Make something small, fast and wrong — foam, screen, code — and put it in front of real users.

  4. 04

    Validate

Formative testing, iterate, and only then commit to tooling, code or the regulatory paper trail.

Engagement models

shape that fits

1–2 hours

Design critique

A live, structured walk-through of your current designs with notes captured as we go. Quickest way to get a second pair of design-engineering eyes on something.

2–5 days

Heuristic review

A written expert review of an existing GUI, device or OOBE against usability heuristics and — where relevant — IEC 62366 / HE75. Prioritised findings with recommended fixes.

Weekly · 1 hour

Office hours

A standing slot each week for your team to bring questions, sketches or specs. Lightweight way to keep a project moving without a full engagement.

1–2 weeks

Discovery sprint

Fixed-scope research or concept exploration. Best when you need a fast, honest read on a problem space or a concept worth testing.

4–12 weeks

Project engagement

A scoped deliverable — a GUI design pass, an OOBE redesign, a formative study and report. Defined milestones, fixed price where possible.

Monthly

Ongoing / retainer

Reserved hours each month for design support across an ongoing programme — useful for teams without a dedicated in-house design engineer.

Investment

ballpark numbers

Hourly

€100–175 / hr

For short, defined pieces of work — a review, a sprint, a focused deliverable.

Day rate

€800–1,400 / day

For projects and retainers booked by the day or week. Longer engagements sit at the lower end.

Design-engineer hybrid rates. Final number flexes with scope, duration, stage and how regulated the work is — happy to talk it through.
